A Matinée of Brass

A Matinée of Brass

Levin and Districts Brass, under musical director David Maas, is holding “A Matinée of Brass”, at 2pm on Sunday (April 13) at the Village Hall, Speldhurst.

“The band is in fine musical form and set to deliver an outstanding performance for the community of Levin once again,” David says. “Audiences will be treated to a varied concert programme from uplifting melodies to timeless classics – something for everyone.”

Wayne Kedzlie, a seasoned A-grade musician with extensive experience in both playing and executive roles for leading brass bands in New Zealand, has recently joined the band. His performances range from soprano cornet to tuba, showcasing his versatility and dedication to the brass band community.  He will feature as cornet soloist in one of the concert items, “Buster Strikes Back”.

Other items on the concert programme include the popular Māori lullaby Hine e Hine, well-known African-American spiritual Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, featuring bass trombone soloist, Matt West, and Caccini’s Ave Maria, arranged for the band by cornet player Andrew Willis.

Eric Ball’s Star Lake, a rousing march, will open the second half of the programme. Another popular piece will be The Floral Dance written by Kate (“Katie”) Moss in 1911.  The song experienced a revival in an arrangement for West Yorkshire’s Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band by their musical director Derek Broadbent. It sold half a million copies, and reached No 2 in the UK Singles Chart by Christmas 1977 (only prevented from reaching No 1 by Mull of Kintyre).

Doors open 1pm. Adults $20, students $5. Speldhurst residents may buy tickets from reception, and non-residents by contacting Colin on 027 275 6121. Door sales – cash and eftpos accepted
