The annual Horowhenua AP&I Show’s Home Industries section, famous for arts, crafts, cooking, baking and preserving, is holding a scarecrow competition this year.
The competition is open to individuals, groups or families of all ages. The scarecrow must be able to stand on its own and not be higher than 1.83m.

All entries are up for judging by public vote. Entry fee is $5 per scarecrow and prizes are New World vouchers donated by the Buck/Latter family: $100 for first prize, $50 for second, $25 for third, $15 for fourth and $10 for fifth prize.
Entries close on January 5, so you have the school holidays to complete your creation.
Home Industries also has a number of categories within its schedule specifically for young people, including a photo competition. These entries close at January 12. More information and an entry form can be found on the website: levinapishow.co.nz. Look under the home industries tab.
There are the usual cooking, jam making, baking, needlework and craft, and knitting sections for locals to enter. For young people there is the junior open class (15 years and under), including a photograph with the theme “food”. Entries are not to be framed or mounted and must not be larger than 5 by 7 inches.
Then there are separate classes for 12-15 year-olds, 8-11 year-olds and those under 7 years of age. Entrants can pick two of seven items listed on the schedule in each class. It’s important to read the schedule before you start as there are strict entry requirements.
Under the needlework section you can find another photography option, which is open to all. This photo must portray a town or city Icon, such as Ohakune’s carrot, or Paeroa’s L&P bottle, or Welington’s Beehive. Dimensions for these photos must be no larger than 5 by 7 inches, not framed or mounted and with the exhibitor’s name in an envelope on the back.
The annual Court competition has the theme: an occupation. There are entry fees for all classes.
