Horowhenua Kāpiti Rugby Football Union has made history, announcing at its annual general meeting this week that Fale Pasifika has become the union’s newest affiliated member.
The decision, now written into the HKRFU constitution, marks the first time a New Zealand provincial union has granted Pasifika an official affiliation with full constitutional voting rights.
The proposal was brought by the HKRFU Māori Board alongside Levin College Old Boys Rugby Football Club. It received unanimous support from members.
HKRFU chief executive Corey Kennett says the move recognises the region’s growing Pasifika community and their impact on the game.
“We at HKRFU have been working hard behind the scenes to give our Pacific aiga their voice and to make sure they’re heard on a constitutional scale,” he says. “I am proud to build upon our legacy and work together with Fale Pasifika to continue building theirs. We hope this starts the conversation within other provincial unions and governing bodies around the country.”
HKRFU chairman John Cribb echoed the sentiment, noting the group’s influence across the region: “We thrive as a union thanks to the diverse community we have both on and off the field.”
Andre Baker, chair of the HKRFU Māori Rugby Board, says he’s pleased to help lead the proposal. He describes the timing as symbolically significant, aligning with Māwharu, a period associated with productivity and positive energy.
“The Horowhenua-Kāpiti Māori Rugby Board welcomes Fale Pasifika Horowhenua to join us as a new affiliate to our provincial union.”
Speaking on behalf of Fale Pasifika, Lea’umoana Ricky Fonoti thanked the union and its members for their support.
“We’re really looking forward to working alongside everyone here at HKRFU,” he says. “Fale Pasifika do so much to get our community involved, so it’s awesome to get this acknowledgement.”
HKRFU leaders say the affiliation marks the beginning of a new chapter as the Union continues to expand and reflect the diverse communities that drive rugby in the region.
