Man arrested in Shannon incident

Police arrested a man after an incident in Shannon on Thursday morning (March 13) that involved gunfire, a crashed car, a fleeing driver, the Armed Offenders Squad and two stolen Holden cars.

Senior sergeant Sam Gilpin says Horowhenua police responded to reports of a vehicle crash just after 5am involving a stolen Holden that collided with a truck in Shannon. The Holden driver fled the scene, and another stolen Holden was seen by police on Stafford Street. The driver refused to stop and was pursued a short distance before he fled the vehicle on foot on Roach Avenue, running through properties to an address known to police on Stout Street.

The male driver discarded a firearm on the street, which was later found by a member of the public.

Sgt Gilpin says the driver entered a sleepout at the Stout Street address, at which point the Armed Offenders Squad was deployed. Police at the scene negotiated with the man, who eventually came out of the sleepout and was arrested without incident about 7.30am.

A 35-year-old man was to appear in Levin District Court on Thursday charged with multiple driving, firearms, drug and assault offences.
