Teen parent resilience honoured

Prize-giving is always special at He Whare Manaaki Tangata – The House That Cares for People.

At the end of every year the teen parent unit at Waiopehu College celebrates the achievements of its students, recognising their efforts in seeking higher education.

He Whare Manaaki Tangata was established in 2014 to ensure those students don’t have to choose between parenting and continuing their education.
By offering on-site childcare, flexible learning, and wrap-around support, the unit embodies the intent behind teen parent units nationwide – giving teen parents access to quality education that supports them in achieving their education and personal aspirations.
The building contains architecturally award winning designed learning spaces for teen parents, and an attached early childhood centre named Arohanui Kindergarten.
He Whare Manaaki Tangata director Misty Sciascia says celebrating student growth and achievement with the wider community is always a highlight of the school year.
“We are aware of how special the awards are by the feedback we receive,” she says.
“This success is a direct reflection of the unwavering manaaki and dedicated support provided by every kaimahi [staff member] and supporter working behind the scenes. In addition, our kaiako [teachers] provide quality learning opportunities which drive students towards academic excellence.
“Their path has been challenging; many, if not all, have encountered road blocks, dead ends, and even setbacks.
“Yet it is a testament to their resilience and commitment to themselves and their children that they have worked through those challenges and are here celebrating their success.”
