Youth baseball in Levin for summer tournament

Levin will host the best of New Zealand’s youth baseball players this summer when about 150 young athletes and their families – some from overseas – compete in the Mid-Summer Blast (MSB), hosted by Baseball Pathways New Zealand.

From January 3-6, the Mid-Summer Blast doubles as the New Zealand Babe Ruth National Championships, one of the largest and most significant baseball tournaments on the national calendar.

Games will be played at several venues, with 12U and 16U matches at Western Park and 14U games at the Levin Domain, which includes the unique opportunity for night baseball under lights. Local food trucks will be at venues, creating a relaxed, fun and family-friendly environment for players, whānau and spectators throughout the tournament.

MSB brings together players in the 12U, 14U and 16U age grades, offering a distinctive drafted-team format. Rather than representing existing clubs, athletes register individually and are drafted into new teams, giving them the chance to play alongside and against new team-mates from different regions and backgrounds, under the guidance of different coaches.

“The format challenges players in a positive way,” says tournament director Hendrix Warren, himself from Levin “It puts them in a new environment, encourages adaptability, and helps them build connections across the baseball community.”

Over four action-packed days, teams will compete in round-robin games, playoff brackets and a championship day, complemented by a popular skills challenge featuring fielding, base running, throwing accuracy and a home-run derby. Championship belts will be awarded to the “biggest bopper” in each division.

Players in the tournament-winning teams in each division will also take home a championship ring.

Hendrix says athletes will enjoy a true “big-league” baseball environment, including a media day for team, individual and group photos, and personalised walk-up songs played as they step up to the plate, just like the pros.

Beyond the on-field action, the Mid-Summer Blast plays a critical role in idendifying player potential. As the charter holders of Babe Ruth League in the New Zealand Region, Baseball Pathways NZ uses the tournament to fifnd athletes capable of representing the region internationally.

Each year, selected players are invited into the Southern Cross “Pac-Men” programme, which sends teams to Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken World Series events in the United States, including:

• 12U – Cal Ripken Major70 World Series in Branson, Missouri

• 14U – Babe Ruth 14U World Series in Eagle Pass, Texas

• 16U – Babe Ruth 13–16 World Series in Branson, Missouri.

Baseball Pathways NZ says it is dedicated to growing baseball in Aotearoa by creating clear, accessible, and sustainable pathways for young athletes, while strengthening communities and providing genuine international opportunities.

Hendrix says the impact of the tournament extends well beyond the diamond.

“A lot of work goes into putting this event together, and without the support of volunteers, officials, local groups, and businesses, hosting it in Levin simply wouldn’t be possible,” he says. “We’re not only showcasing the sport of baseball, we’re also showcasing Horowhenua and our community.”

With teams, whānau and supporters filling local accommodation, cafés and businesses, the Mid-Summer Blast is expected to deliver a strong boost to the local economy, while adding to Levin’s reputation as a host for national sports.
