The 17-year-old was one of 24 female gymnasts from New Zealand sent to compete at the WOGA classic invitational event in Texas, United States, against some of the best talent in the world.
Now attending Feilding High School and competing for Manawatū Gymsports, she was crowned New Zealand champion in the Step 9 class in October last year.
That result opened the pathway to compete at the Texas event.
Zahara’s impressive routines saw her win the overall gold medal at Texas. Exceptional upper-body strength and fearless approach, coupled with an impressive routine, saw her place first in the uneven bars and vault, and second on the beam.
Coach Ann-Marie Dawson says Zahara’s performance solidifies her position as a rising gymnast in New Zealand.
She says Zahara hopes to enter the international circuit later this year, but it will require sponsorship to make this dream a reality, with all international competitions being self-funded.
It can cost as much as $30,000 to compete on the international circuit.
“Zahara is seriously considering leaving school so she can support her gymnastics journey, so we are doing everything possible to keep her life balanced by attending school and trying to help fund her journey,” Ann-Marie says.
